Why not just upload the Word file to KDP?
You can, and it often works. The trouble is that KDP converts it for you, and you only find out what it did after uploading — manual page breaks become blank screens, hand-styled chapter titles produce no navigation, and tab-indented paragraphs come out ragged.
Producing the EPUB yourself means the structure is decided before it reaches Amazon, and you can open it in Kindle Previewer to see exactly what readers will get.

- What does Amazon KDP actually accept?
- KDP takes EPUB, and also Word .docx. EPUB is the safer choice: it is what Kindle uses internally, so what you upload is much closer to what readers see. We give you both.
- What is a reflowable ebook?
- One where the reader chooses the font, the size, and the margins, and the text re-wraps to fit. That is how nearly all Kindle novels work. It is the opposite of a print PDF, where the page is fixed — which is why we do not produce a PDF here.
- Will my chapters show up in the Kindle menu?
- Yes. Each chapter becomes its own section with a navigation entry, so the Go To menu and progress tracking work properly. Chapters you wrote as plain bold paragraphs are detected too.
- Do I need a cover?
- KDP asks for a cover image separately when you publish, so you do not need one here. This tool handles the interior — the text, structure, and navigation.
- Does this change my writing?
- No. Layout and punctuation style only — curly quotes, em dashes, consistent spacing. Your sentences are never rewritten or edited.
- What does it cost?
- Formatting is free. Free files include a short closing line crediting the tool, allow three adjustments, and are kept for 24 hours. Unlocking one file costs $5 once — no subscription — which removes that line, lifts the adjustment limit, and keeps the file for 30 days.
