Kindle Create vs typesetting.ai

Amazon’s own free desktop application for turning a manuscript into a Kindle ebook and, from the same file, a KDP paperback.

The short answer

Kindle Create is free, made by Amazon, and produces a file Amazon is guaranteed to accept — if Amazon is the only store you will ever use, it is a sensible choice and we would not talk you out of it. Its limit is that KPF is a dead end: it cannot go to any other store, so a book that might one day go wide is built twice. We produce an EPUB 3 that works on Amazon and everywhere else, from the same messy Word file, in a browser. The decision is mostly about whether “Amazon only” is a fact about your book or just about this week.

Facts about Kindle Create are from its own site, read September 2026. We are not affiliated with it, and if its page has changed since, it is right and we are wrong.

Where each is better

Choose Kindle Create when

  • You are publishing on Amazon and nowhere else. KPF is Amazon’s preferred format and carries features — image bleeds, drop caps, chapter-start imagery — that its own EPUB export leaves out.
  • You want Amazon’s tool, free, with the certainty that KDP will take what it produces.
  • Your book is a print replica — a textbook or travel guide built from a PDF — or a comic. Those are Kindle Create book types; we do not do fixed layout at all.

Choose typesetting.ai when

  • You might ever publish outside Amazon. KPF cannot be uploaded to Apple Books, Kobo or Google Play; “publishing outside of Kindle” is unsupported. Our EPUB 3 goes everywhere, Amazon included.
  • You want to work in a browser, on any device, with nothing installed. Kindle Create is a Windows and Mac desktop app.
  • The manuscript is messy. Kindle Create detects chapters from headings; it does not recover structure that was styled by hand.
  • You are submitting to agents, or you write poetry, or you want a DOCX back. Kindle Create does none of those.
  • You want the paperback’s gutter sized to its measured page count, and a check against KDP’s per-trim page limits before you upload.

What this page does not say

The honest limits

We have not used Kindle Create on your book, and we do not know your book. Everything above about Kindle Create comes from what it says about itself; everything about us comes from what the tool actually does, which you can test free before deciding anything.

And the things we cannot do are the same regardless of what Kindle Createcan: no images in a print interior, no fixed-layout books, no footnotes or indexes, no hardcover. If your book needs those, that decides it, and this page is not the one to read.

Checked against the source

The requirements on this page are published by the organisation below, not by us. We last read it in September 2026 and compared it against what the tool produces. If a requirement has changed since, the source is right and we are wrong — tell us and we will fix it.

Questions

Kindle Create and typesetting.ai, answered

Is Kindle Create free?

Yes. It is Amazon’s own tool and there is no charge.

Can I upload a Kindle Create file to Apple Books or Kobo?

Not a KPF file, no. Kindle Create can also export an EPUB for reflowable books, but Amazon notes that export does not carry all of Kindle Create’s features, and the tool is built for Kindle.

Can I use both?

Yes. Our Kindle formatter returns a structured DOCX as well as an EPUB, and Kindle Create will open that DOCX if you want to add its themes or image features on top.
