Reedsy Studio vs typesetting.ai
A free, web-based writing and formatting editor from Reedsy, the freelance marketplace, with paid add-ons for writing and outlining.
The short answer
Reedsy is free, and for an author with a clean manuscript who likes one of its templates, free is hard to argue with. We charge $5 a file, and what that buys is a tool that reads structure out of a messy document, produces the submission manuscript and the Word file as well as the ebook and print interior, and checks the paperback against KDP’s rules first. If your manuscript is already tidy and you only need an EPUB, try Reedsy first; if you have tried it and the chapter menu came out wrong, that is the problem we exist for.
Facts about Reedsy Studio are from its own site, read September 2026. We are not affiliated with it, and if its page has changed since, it is right and we are wrong.
Where each is better
Choose Reedsy Studio when
- Your budget is zero and stays zero. Reedsy's formatting is free with no unlock; ours is free to read but $5 to download without a credit line.
- You want to write the book in the same browser tool you format it in, with collaboration built in.
- You are happy with one of its templates and your manuscript is already cleanly structured.
Choose typesetting.ai when
- The manuscript is messy. Reedsy formats the structure you give it; we work out the structure first, which is most of the job with a real-world Word file.
- You are submitting to agents. Reedsy is aimed at publishing; we produce a Shunn-standard manuscript.
- You want a DOCX back. Reedsy’s page lists EPUB and PDF; it does not state a Word export, and Kindle Create and many editors want one.
- You write poetry.
- You want to know before uploading whether KDP will reject the page count, gutter or spine.
- You want to change something by describing it — “make the chapter titles smaller” — rather than by choosing a different template.
Side by side
The same eleven questions, asked of both
| Reedsy Studio | typesetting.ai | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free for writing and formatting — “and they always will be.” Paid add-ons exist for other features. | Free to format and read the result. $5 to unlock one file, once. $12 a month for everything. |
| Runs on | Web. No offline access. | Any browser. Nothing to install. |
| Book design control | A small set of templates; limited per-element control. | Deliberately little. Type, spacing, chapter openings and scene-break marker, changed in plain English. No themes, no drag-and-drop layout. |
| Automation | Templates applied to the structure you build in its editor. | Reads the manuscript's structure — chapters, scene breaks, headings styled by hand — and applies a publishing standard to it. The structure step uses AI; every measurement is arithmetic. |
| EPUB output | EPUB. | EPUB 3, with a real navigation document and metadata, run through EPUBCheck before download. EPUB 2 on request. |
| Print output | Print-ready PDF, with trim sizes. | Paperback interior PDF at all 16 KDP trim sizes, mirrored margins, gutter sized to the measured page count. Text only — no images in the interior, no bleed, no hardcover. |
| Poetry | Not a stated feature on its page. | A dedicated formatter that preserves line breaks, indentation and stanza spacing across PDF, EPUB and DOCX. |
| Amazon KDP | EPUB and PDF that KDP accepts. | Kindle EPUB plus a structured DOCX; paperback interior to KDP's trim, margin and page-count rules; a requirements checker against Amazon's published limits. |
| Learning curve | Low. It is a clean editor with a formatting step at the end. | None to speak of. Upload a .docx, read the result, ask for changes in a sentence. |
| Manual customisation | Limited. You pick a template; you do not redesign it. | Limited by design. If you want to move things by hand, this is the wrong tool. |
| Best for | Authors with no budget and a clean manuscript who are happy with one of its templates. | Authors with a finished Word manuscript who want the correct publishing file quickly, without learning a layout program — and anyone with a messy file that other tools choke on. |
What this page does not say
The honest limits
We have not used Reedsy Studio on your book, and we do not know your book. Everything above about Reedsy Studio comes from what it says about itself; everything about us comes from what the tool actually does, which you can test free before deciding anything.
And the things we cannot do are the same regardless of what Reedsy Studiocan: no images in a print interior, no fixed-layout books, no footnotes or indexes, no hardcover. If your book needs those, that decides it, and this page is not the one to read.
Checked against the source
The requirements on this page are published by the organisation below, not by us. We last read it in September 2026 and compared it against what the tool produces. If a requirement has changed since, the source is right and we are wrong — tell us and we will fix it.

Questions
Reedsy Studio and typesetting.ai, answered
Is Reedsy really free?
Its writing and formatting are, by its own statement. It is a lead generator for Reedsy’s marketplace of editors and designers, which is a perfectly reasonable business model and means the formatting tool is unlikely to become paid.
Why pay $5 here when Reedsy is free?
Because the two do different amounts of work. Reedsy applies a template to structure you have marked; we recover the structure from a file where it was never marked, and we produce files Reedsy does not — a Shunn manuscript, a DOCX, a poetry layout — plus a KDP requirements check.
Does Reedsy export a Word file?
Its page lists EPUB and print-ready PDF as exports and does not mention DOCX. We do not state that it cannot; we state that its page does not say it can.

The cheapest way to settle it is to try this one: upload a chapter and read the result before paying anything. All the formatters.
