Questions
- What is EPUBCheck, and why does it matter?
- It is the reference validator maintained by the W3C and DAISY Consortium, and it is what retailers and library platforms run on submissions. If a file fails EPUBCheck, expect it to be rejected. We run it on every EPUB we produce and show you the result before you download.
- EPUB 2 or EPUB 3?
- EPUB 3 unless you have a reason otherwise — it is the current standard and every major store accepts it. EPUB 2 is worth choosing only for quite old devices, or when a specific platform asks for it. There is a toggle.
- Where can I use the file?
- Kobo, Apple Books, Google Play Books, Barnes & Noble, Draft2Digital, most library systems, and any e-reader that opens EPUB. For Amazon specifically, the Kindle formatter is a better fit — it also gives you a Word file for Kindle Create.
- Does it handle chapters and navigation?
- Yes. Each chapter becomes its own section with a table-of-contents entry, so readers can jump between chapters and progress tracking works. Chapters you wrote as plain bold paragraphs are detected too.
- Does this change my writing?
- No. Layout and punctuation style only — curly quotes, em dashes, consistent spacing. Your sentences are never rewritten or edited.
- What does it cost?
- Formatting is free. Free files include a short closing line crediting the tool, allow three adjustments, and are kept for 24 hours. Unlocking one file costs $5 once — no subscription — which removes that line, lifts the adjustment limit, and keeps the file for 30 days.
