EPUB to Word — Get Back an Editable Manuscript

Standard manuscript format — 12pt monospace, double-spaced, generous margins, chapters starting on a new page. That is deliberate: nearly everyone converting an ebook back to Word is sending it to a person who will mark it up, and this is the format built for being marked up.

Yes, and more reliably than converting from a Word original. An EPUB was built as separate chapter documents with a navigation map, so the structure is stated in the file. Reading it back means the chapters are known rather than inferred from which lines happen to be bold.

Usually because a person asked for one — an editor, a proofreader, a competition, a co-author. Sometimes because the ebook is the only copy left: the original .docx is on a dead laptop and the published file is what survived. Both are common.

The structure is: chapters, paragraphs, italics, bold, block quotes and scene breaks. The visual styling is not, and should not be — an ebook's appearance belongs to the reading device, so there is no original typeface or size to preserve. What comes back is the text in a format made for editing.

Neither is carried through. Images need handling we have not built, and footnotes need their own numbering and placement rules. If your book depends on either, this will quietly lose them, so it is not the right tool.

No, and this is a real limit rather than a missing feature. A PDF records where ink goes on a page — not what is a heading, a paragraph, or a footnote. Recovering meaning from that is a different and much harder problem than reading an EPUB, which states its structure outright.
