typesetting.ai is online book formatting software for authors and self-publishers. It turns Word manuscripts into Kindle/KDP ebooks, validated EPUB files, print-ready book interiors, agent-standard manuscripts and poetry layouts. It also includes free publishing tools for EPUB validation, front matter, book margins and spine calculations.
What it does
One manuscript, five finished files
You upload the .docx you already have. The document's structure is read — what is a chapter opening, what is a scene break, what is body text, what should not be in the book body at all — and then the rules of one particular publishing job are applied to it.
Which rules depends on what the file is for, and they genuinely conflict. A print interior has fixed pages, mirrored margins and a gutter sized to its page count. A reflowable ebook has none of those, because the reader chooses the type size and there are no pages. An agent's manuscript is deliberately plain, so an editor can mark it up. That is why there are five formatters and not one export menu.

How it uses AI
What the AI does, and the longer list of what it does not
typesetting.ai uses AI to identify manuscript structure — chapters, scene breaks and headings that were styled as bold text rather than marked as headings. It does not use AI to rewrite prose or to decide print measurements.
The model is used for
- Recognising chapter openings and scene breaks.
- Spotting structure that was styled rather than marked up.
- Asking about genuinely ambiguous pages instead of guessing.
- Turning a plain-English request — “make the chapter titles smaller” — into the setting you meant.
Ordinary arithmetic handles
- Margins, gutters and trim geometry.
- Spine width from page count and paper stock.
- Page breaks, folios and where a chapter opens.
- Every export rule for PDF, EPUB and DOCX.
The split is the design. A model is genuinely better than a rule at recognising structure in a messy document, and genuinely worse than arithmetic at anything where being nearly right is useless — a gutter that is nearly wide enough is a rejected upload.
Nothing rewrites, reorders or shortens your prose. The one thing that does change inside your text is punctuation style — straight quotes curled, double hyphens turned into dashes — and every instance is counted back to you in a report that comes with the file.

Whose rules these are
Almost nothing here is our opinion. A gutter is Amazon's requirement, a valid EPUB is the W3C's definition, and standard manuscript format is a convention William Shunn documented. What the software contributes is implementing them exactly, and noticing when they change.
Checked against the source
The requirements on this page are published by the organisations below, not by us. We last read them in September 2026 and compared them against what the tool produces. If a requirement has changed since, the source is right and we are wrong — tell us and we will fix it.

Only a structural outline reaches the AI model — headings, where paragraphs begin, what looks like a scene break — not full chapters of prose. Manuscripts are never used for model training, by us or by Anthropic.
