An ebook has no pages. A paperback is nothing but pages
Everything an EPUB deliberately leaves to the reader, a printed book has to decide once and for ever. That is the whole conversion: not a change of file type, but supplying every measurement the ebook was right not to have.

The page count creates the gutter
Your EPUB has no page count, so it appears the moment the text is set at a trim size — and it decides the inside margin KDP requires.

What this does not do

Images in the EPUB are not carried through
The conversion handles text: chapters, paragraphs, emphasis, scene breaks. Images embedded in the EPUB are not placed into the print interior, because positioning an image on a physical page is a layout decision rather than a conversion.
So this suits novels, memoirs and prose non-fiction. An illustrated book, a cookbook or anything where images sit in particular places needs image handling this does not have yet, and we would rather say so than hand you a file with the pictures missing.

What kind of PDF do I get?
A print interior: the page is the finished book page at the trim size you choose, with mirrored margins and an inside margin sized to the page count. It is meant for a printer, not for reading on a screen — a screen-sized PDF of an ebook is something an ereader already does better.
Why does converting an EPUB to print need any decisions?
Because an EPUB has none of the things a printed page is made of. It has no page size, no margins and no page count — the reader's device decides all three at reading time. Going to print means supplying them, which is why you pick a trim size here and why the page count only becomes real once the file is laid out.
Is this better than converting the original Word file?
Usually the EPUB is better, which surprises people. A Word file has no declared structure — chapter titles are just bold text, and the chapters have to be inferred. An EPUB was built as separate chapter documents with a navigation map, so the structure is stated rather than guessed at. If you have both, the EPUB is the more reliable source.
What about images in the EPUB?
Not carried through. The pipeline handles text — headings, paragraphs, block quotes, scene breaks — and an illustrated book needs image handling we have not built. If your EPUB is mostly pictures, this is not the right tool and we would rather say so before you upload it.
Can I go the other way?
Yes — a .docx or .epub in, an EPUB out, on the EPUB formatter. What we cannot do yet is read a PDF, which is a genuinely harder problem: a PDF records where ink goes, not what the text means.
